Donald Trump and Eminem

Similarities between the early 2000’s Eminem, and the 2016/17 Donald Trump, are undeniable.

The rebellious, anti- establishment, decidedly provocative nature of both figures certainly drew me in, as I supported Donald Trump’s run for President, and I enjoy Eminem’s older music.

Sure differences between the two are obvious, but Eminem and Donald Trump’s success was basically achieved through the same crowd: predominantly white, blue collar people that were tired of political correctness and tip- toeing around vital issues.

This is what made Eminem’s recent freestyle against Donald Trump all the more disappointing, as Eminem has been subsumed by the same pop culture he once proudly derided.

Perhaps if Eminem took a step back, he might see this inherent contradiction, and that  condemning Donald Trump leads a strong trace back to his own life story.

In any case, I remain grateful of the contributions both Eminem and Donald Trump have made against political correctness.

But that Donald Trump captures the same defiant spirit the 2000’s top selling artist once did, speaks volumes as to his resonance among ordinary, working people.

  1. Interesting video. I didn’t know that Eminem was a Trump fan from way back or anti-establishment. But something changed to make him change. The video author thinks that his anti-establishment persona was real back then and if that’s true, then he has succumbed to the media lies against Trump. Or was he an opportunist? Was Marshall just trying to be edgy in order to sell records back then? Is that what he’s doing now because he’s got an album coming out? I think it’s good to be cautious when judging a person’s motives but if you step back and look at the pattern, another picture emerges. Look at all the Hollywood types who have come out against Trump…they suddenly get a movie or tv deal, get an award of some type, and are generally rewarded for their anti-Trump display and I see Marshall as no different. Is it just a coincidence that he has a new album coming out? Is he just trying to generate buzz in order to get his relevancy back and generate sales? I don’t know and I really don’t care as I’ve never been a fan of his. I’m a lot older and more into old school funk, hip hop & r&b. 🙂

    1. I honestly think Eminem did revel in his anti establishment approach once upon a time, and he did genuinely believe in it. But now he’s simply grown out of touch and as you say, Trump bashing is a way for plenty of washed up celebrities to reenter the public eye.
